The current water bills are going in the mail today. These include final readings from your old meter and current readings from the new meter. Some will be pleased to see that they have a credit from being previously overestimated. Others, will have larger than usual bills if they were underestimated. Some of you were estimated for years, for many different reasons, and will have very large bills for the water that you used. For these large bills, please understand that the Town will not charge you a late fee on the bill and will allow you to pay it over time. The Water District has been losing money for years because of having to estimate so many users. The new meter system will prevent estimates. If you have any questions about your bill, please contact me during my office hours and I will be happy to explain the charges.
Also, please note that the new meter system alerts us of possible leaks at your location - and we will be happy to notify you if we have a phone number in our records. It will also tell us if it is tampered with in any way. It records usage for more than 90 days. The Machias Water District Law prohibits anyone from disabling or tampering with the water meter system. The Town Board has said that they will enforce the law and press charges on anyone attempting to avoid paying for their water usage. The law is available on this site under "Local Laws" - Local Law 2013-1.
Local Justice Courts under attack by New York State
The New York State Senate and New York State Assembly are looking to adopt legislation to remove the local justice courts and replace them with regional, state-run courts that will be overseen by lawyers who have at least five-years of experience. All of the control and money that currently filters into our local communities will be gone and taken by New York State. What control will local communities have over local law enforcement? This is just another way that the state is trying to take away our rights and filter more money to New York City and their pet projects. Please write to your senator, assemblyman, and Govenor Hochul to tell them that you don't support this legislation. The contact info for the representatives of our area are below. For the Senate, it is Bill number S-00139B and it has already been passed. For the Assembly, it is Bill A 1358-B and has not been passed yet. A copy of the Assembly Bill is available below.

Attention all residents & visitors to Lime Lake. The Machias Fire Department has asked that we remind you that there is no parking on the streets around the Lake. This restriction is for your safety and that of your neighbors. If the fire trucks or ambulance can't get through to a call, the result could be devastating. Please be a good neighbor/citizen and park somewhere else.
PLEASE NOTE: The Assessor will be in their Machias office on the 3rd Friday from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. This change takes affect immediately. As always, they are available by phone at 716-938-2343 or in person during normal business hours at their Little Valley office.
